RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
